Prisons- If anyone has any leads..

In October I started doing research on a project to document the closing of Prisons and the effect this had on the surrounding communities and their economy. On June 30th, 2011 Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced the closing of 7 prisons in New York state due to falling inmate numbers and to save taxpayers $184 million. In many of the small rural towns the prisons are the sole economy for locals and their livelihood depends on it in one way or another. According to NPR  the rural counties in upstate New York are known as "Little Siberia"-becuase of the harsh winters and because prisons are a big part of the local economy.

I've made much research on the subject, have a list of communities and prisons but have hit a wall in trying to gain access to actual prisons or in finding someone willing to be interviewd. My research did lead me to Mid-Orange, however, the prison was closed one week before I arrived. I was able to poke around and take some pictures. I will return for a follow-up.

If anyone has any tips, or contacts they'd be willing to share it would be much appreciated. Send me a personal mail. info(at)marlonkrieger.com
